John Dawson - Guitar and Autoharp

''This private press album by John Dawson, a founding member of New Riders Of The Purple Sage, was discovered at the Alemany Flea Market in San Francisco a few years ago, and may be the only copy still in existence. The album includes two original Dawson compositions and is undoubtedly his first and only solo album. Dawson displays awesome fingerpicking chops and travis expertise on this record that do not show up in his later work. His talent and youthful idealism shine through beautifully on this nascent effort.

Grateful Dead and NRPS fans, collectors and historians were unaware of its existence until very recently.

Two cuts - ‘Birmingham Town’ a Dawson original and John’s cover of Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice’ were debuted March 11th 2017 on David Gans’ Grateful Dead Marathon on KPFA.

The album was recorded in 1964 at W. A. Palmer Films Inc. Belmont CA laboratory by an an engineer named Forrest Boothe. John’s father, also a film maker, was a friend of Palmer’s and arranged the recording session to showcase his nineteen year old son’s talents.

The album was pressed by RCA Victor Custom Records in Hollywood '' (from ebay)
