Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – FF》(Cassette version)
Woah what the hell is this? Yeah, so this was found on Soulseek recently by a legendary member of the legendary Ariel Pink discord server (about to have its fourth anniversary!). This is a very interesting listen for a couple reasons. I mean for one it's tangible evidence that Ariel made cassettes and it's got Neverendinglovesong on it? What? And the tracks were already titled? Double what? The guy who had this posted also had an out of sequence Lover Boy in his shared files, but it wasn't as interesting.
No, the reason I find this most interesting is what it means about the original 2001 CDs of Scared Famous and FF. You see, most of Ariel's albums were transferred to disc using his own (broken) tapedeck. This is why you see so much speed and quality fluctuation in say... House Arrest. A few releases, namely Worn Copy and The Doldrums were mixed down by outside parties using working equipment.
Now, think about the subsequent Scared Famous comps. Those have quality drops, speed fluctuations, all characteristics of Ariel's bad tape transfers. I wonder if the CD set was transferred by an outside party, because this tape (which would have been made by ariel) sounds so similar to the issues you get on the later Scared Famous CDs and other home releases. Just some food for thought!
