"The Palace Hotel. The story of this great Torquay hotel begins in 1841 with the building of Bishopstowe villa by Henry Philpotts, Bishop of Exeter, in 25 acres of land near Anstey's Cove. It remained a private residence for the next 80 years, until it was turned into a hotel by industrialist Mr. George Hands.
Bishopstowe was extended in almost every direction, and was reborn as the Palace Hotel in 1921. It became known nationally for the incredible range of facilities on offer, its outstanding cuisine and spacious accommodation - many bedrooms had views across immaculate landscaped gardens out to sea.
In 1939, the Palace Hotel was requisitioned by the military as a Second World War hospital for officers from the RAF. However, tragedy struck in 1942 when a bomb destroyed the east wing of the hotel and more than 60 patients were killed. After another bomb struck in 1943, the hotel was abandoned with half of it on the brink of collapse.
Against all odds, the Palace Hotel would come back to life. It re-opened in 1948 under the management of George Conquest and, in the coming years, the East Wing of the hotel was fully rebuilt and the hotel's reputation restored. Mr. Conquest, who worked at the hotel before the war, found himself surrounded by his old colleagues, many of whom returned to the Palace with him.
Nearly 70 years later, the Palace Hotel is empty. In July 2017, its doors closed and 80 staff left, after it was sold to a Singapore investor with big plans for the site. It has been said that there will be a number of 'construction jobs for local companies', although the precise plans are not clear. It has not been said whether the current building will be saved, or instead demolished after nearly a century of history as a hotel - time will tell.
Here's to the Palace - a Torquay icon."
